Introduction

Hi Everyone,

A little about myself. I travelled around for a few years after college before finally ending up back home. I live with my husband, 2 dogs, 6 chickens, the rooster and several thousand bees on a sixth of an acre. I grow most of the fruits, berries and vegetables that we eat during the year and fortunately my husband cooks them (I am a lucky girl). I graduated from college in 2000 with a bachelors. It has been a long time since I’ve taken a college class and I’m finding the IT learning curve to be a bit of a challenge. I am hoping to complete the certificate program in sustainable food and agriculture if I can first figure out how to post this to a blog. I spend most of my free time with my family and animals. I also garden, can, preserve, forage, read and volunteer with the local gleaning group and Permaculture guild.

I am very interesting in learning about sustainable living and agriculture. My long term goal is to live a completely self sufficient life, or at least as much as is possible in this day and age. When I think about sustainable agriculture I think about the stories my grandfather used to tell me about lifeĀ 50 years ago. Then there were nothing but small family farms. Peoples lives were centered around their families, their farms, their friends and their community. There was a respect for the land, the water, the air and the plants and animals that sustained them. They had a deep understanding that all life was intertwined and interdependent and they worked with nature to ensure long term prosperity for everything, not just themselves. I find myself wishing I had paid better attention to the lessons enclosed in those stories and am hoping that my studies will help me regain some of the knowledge that’s been lost.

I am looking forward to this class and learning and sharing with all of you.
